A Lady on the Loose
How does one get inspired to take on the world with just two wheels? Where does the drive or desire come from?
For many, it originates from the wealth of information out there about expeditions past and due to the internet people can follow journeys live and in action. There are many expos and events out there, like Horizons Unlimited, that connect riders all around the world.
Although you may not be the first explorer to put two wheels on some of the global roads, it is still your first time and a journey of exploration into self. Large motorcycle trips tend to change people, usually for the better. We become more open, more culturally aware, and more willing to experience life rather than just exist within it.
For the wind, the freedom, for all the reasons we have heard of WHY-RIDE. Inspiration brings motivation to get us moving, life is meant for the living, and if done on two wheels, there is an entirely different perspective of the world!
Meet Lois Pryce; she had a good career with BBC one many would love to have…but it was not enough. Tired of the 9 to 5 grind and cubicle life she gave into her passion and hit the road on a motorcycle. She was 29, “with itchy feet, a newly-minted motorcycle license and an office job – a potentially explosive combination!" Without a plan of where she would start and end, she hit the road anyways. In her first book Lois on the Loose, a well-captured journey filled with humor, honesty, and bumps in the road- not just literally but in life! A beautiful tale of intertwined love of adventure and motorbikes!
But Lois got an “infection” on this first journey, a deep one that she will carry with her, as many adventure motorcyclists do. This infection is a soul disease of love for solo adventure moto travel. She did not stop after Lois on the Loose, and three years later took on Africa which can be read about in her second book Red Tape and White Knuckles.
This week I received my pre-order book of her most recent adventure into Iran. It was delayed a month in the release because the first printing in Europe sold out! Lois is not only an inspiration for adventurers, but her books are well crafted and excellent reads. Her journalism experience and lust for two wheels give way to a depth in both writing and riding.
I have been devouring Revolutionary Ride and can’t help feeling that itch of infection crawl back up in me. The desire to plan and begin the next big journey. So go on, pick up any one of Lois’ books and allow the feeling of excitement in exploration.
