Race Recap: Washougal Motocross 2021
Halfway through the 2021 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, Washougal Washington was the destination this past weekend for the points leading 450 class Dylan Ferrandis and 250 class Justin Cooper. With an almost three-week break in the schedule, this race is so important as going into a break that long with the confidence of a win under your belt can boost your mentality to carry you through the rest of the season.
In the 250 class, the first moto had a gnarly crash in the first turn that claimed Jalek Swoll, who took the overall win in High Point 4 races ago, was carted off the track and would take a DNF for the moto. Jo Shimoda would take a trip to the pits in order to get his mangled handled bars fixed after also being involved in the first turn crash. Michael Mosiman got the holeshot and lead until Justin Cooper eventually took the lead on his Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha. Cooper would hold off charging RJ Hampshire on his Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing bike for the first moto win.
Former point’s leader Team Honda HRC rider Jett Lawrence would finish with a disappointing 7th place in the first moto after a 4th overall in Millville and a 6th overall finish in Southwick he had to push to make up some ground in the second moto. His brother however placed in 5th in the first moto following his last race 5-5 finish.
The 450 class first moto was Chase Sextons from the beginning to the end. Sexton grabbed the holeshot and never looked back and wasn’t even challenged by another rider after pulling away from Honda HRC teammate Ken Roczen. Monster Energy Kawasaki rider Eli Tomac, who excepted to contend for the Outdoor Championship, made a second-place finish and was followed by Red Bull KTM rider Marvin Musquin. Both riders are expected to be on different bikes next year, with Tomac already committed to Star Racing Yamaha.
The 250 second moto would pit two Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha teammates against each other. Justin Cooper and Jeremy Martin would battle it out for the win. With Jeremy Martin finishing the first moto in 3rd Cooper needed to maintain his second-place position in order to get the overall win. Unfortunately, this would not be the case when Cooper crashed late in the race causing him to drop and finish in 8th position. Jett Lawrence redeemed his 7th place finish in the first moto and took second place giving him 4th place overall. 3rd place went to Justin Cooper, 2nd place to R.J. Hampshire, and the overall win going to Jeremy Martin.
The 450 second moto holeshot would go to Red Bull KTM rider Cooper Webb while the 450 points leader Dylan Ferrandis would quickly take back the lead and never be caught. Eli Tomac was the biggest mover in the race overtaking the likes of Webb, Aaron Plessinger, and Sexton. Chase Sexton, however, would earn the overall win by finishing first place in the first moto and third position in the second moto. Eli Tomac would take second place with a pair of 2nd place moto finishes, and Dylan Ferrandis finishing in third on the day.
The next race is set for Unadilla in New Berlin, New York on August 14 which starts the final five weeks of racing in the US during the 2021 season.
